About Chora Sfakion

Chora Sfakion is the main village of the region of Sfakia, which is set in a picturesque region on the edge of the Libyan sea. Sfakia is a region set far away from the mass tourism that can be seen along the North coast. It has around 300 inhabitants, and locals outnumber the tourists all year round.

North-South divide: The boundary between the North and South of Crete is set by the White Mountains, which are made predominantly of limestone and are covered in snow untill late Spring. There are only a few roads that pass over this mountain range, one to Samaria Gorge, and the other to Chora Sfakion. The lack of roads makes access to the region increasingly difficult, and this is the main reason why the area has been left so untouched, in comparison to the busy North.

Although the South of the island of Crete, and the region of Sfakia lacks tourists when compared to the North. However, many tour operators organise day trips to the area. Chora Sfakion runs a daily ferry service to Samaria Gorge, which attracts hundreds of tourists a day. Other attractions include coastal walkways, picturesque mountain scenery and various other gorges.
