Welcome to Group 1′s Blog!

The whole group.
We are currently Year 1 undergraduates studying Human and Physical Geography BSc. From the 16th to 23rd June 2009 we are to undertake fieldwork in Chora Sfakion. The group consists of: Matt Smith, Matt Mchale, Katherine Williams, Jo Whitaker and Becki Tully and during the week we will be investigating different aspects of human and physical geography.

The glorious group 1!
The human side involves the evaluation of the impact of human activity, primarily tourism, on the area between and including Chora Sfakion and the Samaria Gorge. This will entail interviewing both tourists and restaurant owners to ask their opinion on various aspects of tourism, such as the impact they have on the area. A main part of the study will also be to make a comparison between the more tourist orientated North and the contrasting South.
The physical aim is to assess the impact of natural activity on the environment and landscape in the area. We will measure and model the extent and impact of recent flood activity in the Ilingas Gorge. This will also involve looking at different slope processes and geomorphological features and considering their importance in the flood.
During the week we will have used a range of equipment in the field to collect, analyse and present data. The weeks events will be updated daily on this blog showing the days findings and final reflections.
